AC Milan home kit 2008-09

AC Milan home kit 2008-09

Italian giants AC Milan had a torrid season in 2007/08 by their high standards and have not qualified for the upcoming season's Champions League.

However, Serie A and UEFA Cup fans will witness the multiple European cup winners and their new star signing Ronaldinho wear a new home kit for the 2008/09 season. The new shirt features 5 red bands and 4 black ones in the front - wider compared to 2007/08 - and black sleeves with the 3 stripes of manufacturer Adidas finished in red.

On the back there is the writing ROSSONERI, in black, on a red background.

Ronaldinho has confirmed that he will be wearing the no.80 shirt - a reference to his birth year.

Ronaldinho saga drawing to an end

July 16th 2008 06:05
Ronaldinho

It appears the transfer rumours surrounding Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho has finally come to a much anticipated conclusion with reports emerging the playmaker has agreed to join Italian giants AC Milan.

An official statement on the AC Milan website said, "AC Milan and Barcelona have reached an agreement in principle over the transfer of Ronaldinho" with the striker expected to put pen to paper sometime on Wednesday (GMT) provided he passes the mandatory medical tests.

Ronaldinho

The player will cost Milan €21 million and up to €25 million when performance-related bonuses are added and he will be tied down to a three-year contract.

The news of a transfer to Milan will come as no surprise and has all but ended any glimmer of hope English Premier League club Manchester City had of capturing the player deemed surplus to requirements by new Barcelona head coach Pep Guardiola.

Chelsea has also been linked with the player, especially now that Scolari - Ronaldinho's mentor/coach at the 2002 World Cup - had joined the cash rich club but unlike Manchester City, the London club never tabled a bid for the two-time world player of the year.

As for Manchester City, their ambition to sign a world-class player has to be applauded, but in all honesty, Ronaldinho had as much chance of joining them as he had of changing careers to play lawn bowls.

The world cup winning striker will join Milan after a disappointing season for the Italian giants which saw them finish 5th place in the Serie A and failed to qualify for the lucrative Champions League.

Andriy Shevchenko

The president of AC Milan and former Prime Minister of Italy, Silvio Berlusconi, wants to re-sign Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko from Chelsea to replace the injured Ronaldo.

Chelsea's £30million flop is a legend back in Milan where he spent a glorious seven years and became the club's second all-time leading goalscorer before moving to the London club in the summer of 2006.

AC Milan

Since moving to Stamford Bridge, he has hardly captured his form and has lost the reputation as one of Europe's deadliest strikers. Spending most of his time on the bench under the Mourinho era, he was rumoured to have caused the huge rift between the ex-manager and club owner Roman Abramovich.

It is hard to see why Sheva would rule out a return to his old hunting ground if Milan were to make an offer to Chelsea. His chances of a starting berth in the side has recently taken another blow with the capture of French striker Nicolas Anelka during the January transfer window. He also seems miserable in London so a move back to Italy, a country which he loves, might be able to reignite his passion and form.

However, at 31 years of age and clearly over the hill, it is very doubtful that he would be an 'ideal choice' as a replacement for Ronaldo, another player who is approaching retirement age, or to help a club which is in a bit of a crisis.

Eight players aged thirty or older featured in the second leg of the Champion's League match against a young Arsenal side and were ran ragged. Adding another 30-something to the squad is hardly planning for the long-term nor rebuilding a squad that needs quite a heavy overhaul to challenge for domestic and European honours.

Berlusconi may be a sentimental guy and the Milan faithful would certainly welcome 'home' one of their favourite sons but the team desperately needs some new blood...thick and fast.
