Transfer window: Final Day Mayhem
September 2nd 2008 04:30
In a frantic finish to the end of the current transfer window, Bulgaria striker Dimitar Berbatov finally made his much anticipated move from Tottenham Hotspur to Manchester United for £30.75m but the highlight of the day was Manchester City nicking Brazilian star Robinho from right under the noses of Chelsea.
The blue half of Manchester shattered the British transfer record by paying Spanish side Real Madrid £32.5m for the Brazilian forward Robinho who joins the club on a four-year deal. Blessed with an abundance of pace and trickery, the 24 year-old has been likened to Brazilian great Pele in the past and helped Real win their second successive La Liga title last year with 11 goals in 32 games.
The player was apparently unhappy with the club for their willingness to sell him to fund a failed move to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United all summer.
Cash rich Chelsea have been linked to Robinho all summer with new boss Luiz Felipe Scolari a huge admirer of his fellow countryman but in the end, Real chose to do business with Manchester City "for reasons of a human nature and for sporting reasons" according to Real president Ramon Calderon - a nicer way to say "up yours!", perhaps.
On the other hand, Berbatov's move to Manchester United came as no surprise with Sir Alex Ferguson being a keen admirer of the striker for a number of seasons now. United's style of play suits the prolific forward perfectly and he will link up with the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez to form a lethal attacking quartet.

Yes, Berbatov will come up against his former striker partner - Robbie Keane - when Utd take on Liverpool and Robinho's first game for Manchester City will be against Chelsea.
Oh the irony of it all!
