SUMMARY:
The group stages of the prestigious UEFA Champions League competition for 2008-09 kicked off overnight with Chelsea, Cluj, Inter, Shakhtar Donetsk, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Liverpool securing wins.
Last season's finalists Chelsea romped to an emphatic victory over French side Bordeaux, firing 4 unanswered goals to earn new boss Luiz Felipe Scolari his first ever Champions League victory. England midfielders Frank Lampard and Joe Cole opened the scoring for the home in the first half with new signings Deco and Bosingwa particularly impressive on their Champions League debut for the London club.
As the visitors tired late in the second half, Chelsea added further gloss on the scoreline with two late goals from Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka in the 82nd and 90th minute respectively.
Meanwhile, Liverpool returned to their favourite hunting ground - the Stade Vélodrome - to beat Marseille 2-1 away from home with inspirational captain Steven Gerrard taking his goal tally to 99 with a well-timed brace.
Marseille skipper Lorik Cana opened the scoring for the home side after beating Reina one-on-one but parity was restored within minutes as the Liverpool skipper replied in emphatic fashion with a superb, curling right foot shot from just outside the box.
The visitors went ahead shortly afterwards after Ryan Babel was judged to have been fouled in the box. Up stepped the talismanic captain to fire his side ahead with a twice-taken penalty.
