SUMMARY:
Germany captain Michael Ballack scored a double to keep Chelsea's title hopes alive as the London club overcame Manchester United 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
While the hosts were clearly the better side on the day, Man Utd boss Sir Alex Ferguson dropped a huge surprise by benching the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez for what could prove as the title decider. The visitors paid for their sloppiness when Ballack opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time with a bullet header from Didier Drogba's cross.
The Red Devils were given a life-line 10 minutes into the second half when Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho made a mess of a clearance attempt to allow Rooney to intercept the ball before firing past Petr Cech.
Just when the game seemed destined for a draw, controversy erupted in the 84th minute when Wiley awarded a penalty for handball against Carrick who was adjudged to have his arm in the way of Essien's cross. Ballack kept his cool to score from the spot to give Chelsea a 2-1 win thus keeping the title race open.
Both teams are now level on points with Manchester United on top due to a superior goal difference.
In other matches, a weakened Liverpool side bounced back from 2-0 down to draw with Birmingham while wins were also recorded for Fulham, Sunderland and Blackburn.
