Iraq defeats Saudi Arabia to win the Asian Cup

Iraq wins Asian Cup

The Iraqi soccer team gave their war-torn country a huge boost and something to cheer about when they beat Saudi Arabia to win the 2007 Asian Cup.

In a huge upset win for Iraq against Saudi Arabia, the three-times winner of the Asian cup, the underdogs dominated their more illustrious opponents to win 1-0 despite wasting glorious opportunities to seal a much bigger win.

Iraqi captain Younis Mahmoud scored the winner in the 71st minute when he climbed above the defence at the far post and headed a perfectly-weighted corner from Hawar Mulla Mohammed into the net.

That was enough to seal the win for the underdogs with Saudi Arabia unable to find a way past the Iraqis, who had the best defence in the competition, conceding just two goals in six matches.

After the unlikely win, Iraq's Brazilian coach Jorvan Vieira said: "This is not just about football... this is more important than that. This has brought great happiness to a whole country. This is not about a team, this is about human beings."

Haha, I always thought the Italians were nuts about soccer, but damn well four people being killed after the victory Really Long Link is pretty hardcore.

Shocking! Some people just like ruining the party for everyone else!

The Italians are very passionate about their football, but some Sth American countries are really something else!!

Thanks for stopping by Ahmed!

If anyone deserved/needed the win it was the Iraqis. I hope the country takes advantage of the brief feeling of unity.

For a country that's been through such horrible times, it's a good-news story for them - and like Jon suggested, hopefully it can be used for good to unite the country.
All the religions and factions that are fighting among themselves on the streets united on the football field to win the tournament. At least it gives some sort of hope to the people there.

well done to the iraqi's, if any country deserved to win after hard times, it would be Iraq, Just hope this brings the country together again, and stop the internal fighting.

....and George W Bush is your reading, just take note how the country came together with celebrations in the street. Get out of Iraq now while things are good.

congrats iraq! some of those boys have really impressive skills and even moreso when considering how fractured their ability to train together is.

hopefully one day soon they'll have a home game on iraqi soil.

Stanley, they'd have to bring an army for security.

Thanks for stopping by everyone.

This was very much a fairy-tale victory for Iraq but they clearly deserved it, even from a football standpoint alone.
