Is Stuart Pearce the right man?
February 1st 2008 10:17
Stuart Pearce has been given a high profile role in the new England managerial set up. He continues as under 21 manager and seems to be part of Capello's coaching and advisory structure for the full squad.
There is no doubting the fighting spirit and patriotism that Pearce possesses. Who can ever forget his reaction to scoring his penalty in the shoot out against Spain in 1996? There is no doubt that he demands 100% from his players and tries to instil fierce pride and determination in each and every one of them.
Pearce had a wonderful career as a player, but has not produced the goods as a manager. His teams will always be gritty and work hard. They will always 'wear their hearts on their sleeves', he would settle for nothing less. What he has not yet demonstrated is the tactical awareness and skill required to succeed as a coach or manager at the highest level.
His first managerial post at Nottingham Forest lasted only 23 games. Of those games he won just 7. At Manchester City he was manager for 97 games and won only 34. As England under 21 coach he has taken charge of 11 games, winning only 5, although to be fair he did take them to the semi-final of the European championships.
Although Pearce was widely respected as a player and is widely respected as a man, I do not think he has the necessary qualities to justify his current position, or indeed succeed in the role.
I hope I am wrong, but there are many other English coaches who have served proper apprentiships as a manager, and shown that they have what it takes. Paul Ince anyone?
