Wayne Rooney suffers fractured foot
August 13th 2007 07:30
Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney could face an extended spell of around three months on the sideline after sustaining a fractured left foot in the opening weekend of the English Premier League 2007-08 season.
This is a blow to his club with Louis Saha, Ole Gunnar Solkjaer and Carlos Tevez all short of match fitness for one reason or another.
England would have been dealt an even bigger blow with the news that one of their key players will almost definitely miss key Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Russia next month with the possibility of missing qualifiers in October against Estonia and the return leg against Russia.
In pre-season interviews, Rooney had said that he was itching to get back to football after the off-season - the longest one he has had for a few years.
Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that Rooney's early season form on their East Asian tour proved that he would be a key player for United this season and felt that his absence in the second-half costed the reigning champions victory against Reading.

Very true and some would even say that his ready-made replacement Carlos Tevez is even better.
Shame England can't call on an Argentine for their must-win Euro 2008 qualifiers though!

I don't think the absence of Rooney will be as tough on Man Utd as it is for England.
